Early career preparation greatly improves the likelihood of finding a satisfying, engaging position after graduation.
SAFS supports our students in their career goals. We strongly encourage our students to engage in at least one activity each quarter towards career development (for example, a resume workshop, a career panel, or an internship). Use this page to initiate your searches.

Where do I go for career assistance? |
Your first stop should be the UW Career Center. The Center assists students in all aspects of career development:
For more information, see the UW Career Center Event and Workshop Calendar. There are also events specific to Environmental Majors that bring employers to UW and provide career information. These events include the Green Career Fair and various student, faculty and alumni panels that discuss career possibilities. |
Is there an online site at UW where I can learn about current job postings? |
The UW Career Center manages Husky Jobs, which is a searchable database of job listings accessible to all current UW students. The UW College of the Environment has also started a new Careers Blog to which you may subscribe. Job announcements should be sent to coeadd@uw.edu The School of Forest Resources maintains a job postings email list, which has an open subscription. The Washington State Chapter of the American Water Resources Association (WA-AWRA) maintains a job postings email list to which you can subscribe by following these directions. Potential employers may send job announcements to waawrajobs@gmail.com. For internships, short-term and summer/seasonal opportunities, students and alumni should also check out the EnvironmentLink Blog (you can "filter by category" through a link in the left column). What resources are targeted towards career opportunities in the field of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences? |
Explore specific career pathways at the UW Career Center. Sea Grant maintains a GREAT and fully comprehensive website about careers in the Aquatic Sciences. The Hopkins Marine Station website provides useful information on careers in the marine sciences. The Ecological Society of America provides advice on seeking careers related to ecology. The faculty and graduate students at SAFS are great resources for learning about careers and upcoming opportunities - talk to them! |
I understand that Alumni assist current students with career development. How do I learn about SAFS Alumni? |
The connections made in a degree program often last for decades, and many of our wonderful alumni have supported our program for years. (Many come to our career fairs to hire our current students!) The UW Alumni Association has a Husky Career Network where they connect students with alumni in their field of study. Your faculty members and the SAFS Adviser are also very useful links - speak to them! |
What steps should I take if I am interested in Graduate School? |
A significant proportion of our students decide to go to graduate school; if not immediately, then within a few years of graduating. The UW Career Center helps prepare students for applying to graduate school by offering workshops. Your faculty and TAs are very good resources for advice. Cultivate relationships with faculty so they can serve as good references for your application. We strongly encourage you to complete a preparation course. The UW Women’s Center has a good, reduced cost GRE preparation course. If you are a first generation college, low income or underrepresented student interested in completing a PhD, the Early Identification Program offers outstanding support. |
