While still able to serve on student committees, Dr. Kocan is no longer accepting advisees.
Our investigations have focused on infectious diseases and the effects of toxic compounds on aquatic organisms. We study both in vitro and in vivo systems to balance the work between cellular/subcellular and whole animal responses. Fish cell culture and explants have been our major in vitro tools, while fish embryos have been emphasized as our in vivo tools. Many of our studies have focused on genotoxicity and embryo toxicity, often interrelating the two systems. In line with this type of research, we have attempted to develop aquatic animal models for biomedical research. Recent studies have focused on emerging diseases in Yukon River chinook salmon.
