As leader of the Washington Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, I am responsible for coordinating and actively participating in research on fish and wildlife resources supported by the cooperating agencies (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; the Washington Departments of Ecology, Fisheries, Natural Resources, and Wildlife; the Schools of Fisheries, and Forest Resources at the University of Washington; and the Wildlife Management Institute) and others. Emphasis is on projects that provide scientific data critical to the missions of the cooperating agencies and provide training for students interested in the management of natural resources. Projects can focus on state, regional, national, and international fish and wildlife management issues. For the past 15 years, I have been involved in research on the effects of environmental contaminants on wildlife, particularly birds. Most recently, my research has focused on the effects of agricultural chemicals on the quality of prairie wetlands for adult and juvenile waterfowl. In the future, I hope to conduct research on the effects of contaminants on the reproduction and survival of free-living wildlife, the methods (bioindicators) used to assess exposure to wildlife to contaminants, as well as issues dealing with the management of wildlife populations in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
