These rates should continue to be used after 6/30/14 until a new agreement is negotiated.
Reminder: Certain costs are exempt from indirect costs (i.e., equipment, graduate operating fees, portions of subcontracts, daily use charges for University research vessels). Equipment Thresholds for indirect cost exemption (effective July 1, 1996).
- Federal Sponsors $2,000 per unit
- Non-Federal Sponsors $2,000 per unit
(Be sure to budget as supplies any items costing less than the per-unit cost described above.)

2. General Budget Categories

4. Projecting Salary Increases
Currently, no salary increases are scheduled. In the case of classified employees, mandatory step increases should be budgeted if the employee has not reached the top of the range. See payroll coordinator for that information.
5. Student Salaries (effective July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012)
All SAFS graduate students are Tier 1
Project 2.5% increase annually beyond June 30, 2012 (unless sponsor allows less).
SAFS approved salary for SAFS students:

Note: Non-SAFS graduate students are paid at a rate determined by their department. Be sure to check current rate.

6. Operating (tuition) and Technology Fee Waivers:
All students: $3,897/quarter (through spring quarter, $11,691).
Summer fee: $1,200 approx. (2 credits).
Of Interest: students are responsible for a fee$286(through spring quarter, $858) as part of the tuition cost. PIs have the option of including that amount in requested Operating Fee support. Inclusive amount would be $3,600 ap/quarter.
Suggestion: Project 11% increase annually (effective every Fall)
Remember: These fees are excluded from indirect costs.
When including the operating portion of tuition for graduate student research assistants in your proposal budget, the correct terminology to use is "graduate operating fee's except for NSF proposals, where "graduate student tuition" should be used. Of interest: Pre-doc RA I and II are included in the Grad Appointments category with the 01-40 code, 16.10% benefit rate.
Note: SAFS Post-Docs use faculty benefit rate of 27.20%. Also note that Post-Doc and Pre-Doc trainees are funded through training grants awarded from the National Institute of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Office of Education (ED). SAFS usually does not receive awards from these agencies.
